Perfectionism can be a double-edged sword – motivating athletes to strive towards extremely high levels of performance, but also fueling concerns over making mistakes, fears of negative social evaluation, and negative reactions to imperfection. To avoid undesirable impacts on performance and long-term involvement in sport, research from the University of Alberta suggests athletes must develop coping strategies that allow them to bounce back after suffering a defeat or failure.
