Gymnastics Canada – MINSK, BLR (August 7, 2017) – The Canadian Rhythmic Gymnastics group finished in sixth place overall in the 5 hoops final at the World Challenge Cup in Minsk, Belarus this weekend.

Group members Elizabet Belittchenko, Renna Cukier, Cleo Page, Vanessa Panov, Anastasia Shanko, and Alexandra Udachina scored 15.550 points in the 5 hoops qualification round to land in seventh place overall and advance to the top eight final. The final saw an elevated level of performance across the board and the Canadian women were no exception, scoring 16.600 points and finishing in sixth position.

“We felt good about our hoops routine in qualification,” said Belittchenko on behalf of the group. “We felt synchronized, clean and expressive. In the finals, we also performed a strong routine, which put us in sixth place.”

The group also competed in the 3 balls and 2 ropes event, but struggled in the routine to score 12.050 and miss the finals. “Our performance with ropes and balls was not as strong as hoops, but we know what we need to work on and we will work hard to improve going forward,” said Belittchenko.

In the individual competition, Carmen Whelan of Aurora, ON and Katherine Uchida of Toronto, ON represented Canada well, finishing 21st and 27th respectively.

“I feel good about my performances this weekend,” said Uchida following the competition. “Three of my four routines had no drops, which shows good progress. I also achieved my highest ball score of the season and placed in the top 20 for the first time at a World Cup event.”

The group and individual gymnasts are now training in Belarus in preparation for next weekend’s World Challenge Cup in Kazan, Russia.
