Yukon set to host Opening Event on the 2016/2017 Canada Cup Series presented by Toyo Tires
Freestyle Canada – Toyo Tires launches Toyo Cup to unite all freestyle athletes on Series
Vancouver, BC – This weekend will mark the kick-off to the 2016/2017 season on the Canada Cup Series presented by Toyo Tires, as well as the start of the all new Toyo Cup, and the athletes are in for a big change of scenery for this opening event.
This is the first time in Freestyle Canada’s history that Whitehorse, Yukon will play host to major freestyle skiing event, in addition to it being the first major winter competition that the Yukon will host since the 2007 Canada Winter Games.
Over 80 slopestyle athletes from the Yukon, British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec will be competing, and have been in training camps all week on the great course, built with support from Freestyle Yukon and local resort, Mount Sima.
“Thankfully, it’s been winter in Whitehorse all month, so the course is in great shape, the jumps are really well-built,” commented Freestyle Canada Competitions Coordinator, Patrick Breault. “The support from Freestyle Yukon and Mount Sima for this competition has been fantastic – we hope to bring more freestyle competitions here in future years.”
To continue growing their relationship with the freestyle community, for the next two seasons, Freestyle Canada is excited to announce Toyo Tires as the presenting sponsor of the Canada Cup Series.
Toyo Tires has supported Freestyle Canada since 2014 and for the second year, has named our organization as the beneficiary of their tire rebate campaign proceeds, from the sales of their fall tire sales.
As an added incentive for Canada Cup competitors, Freestyle Canada and Toyo Tires is excited to launch the Toyo Cup, a special competition that will unite freestyle skiers of all disciplines and skill levels.
“We’re excited to increase our involvement with young skiers across Canada through the Canada Cup Series,” explains Ron Golab, Advertising Manager at Toyo Tires. “The Toyo Cup will encourage athletes of all disciplines to perform at their best. In a sense, it follows our ‘Driven to Perform’ tagline: just as we are driven to produce the best tires, these athletes are driven to be the best in the world.”
Freestyle Canada has developed a specific ranking system for the Toyo Cup, which will determine the most consistent performer overall, across all of our disciplines, in the Canada Cup Series (see ranking criteria). At the end of the season, the Toyo Cup, along with a $5000 education bursary and a set of winter tires, will be awarded to the top male and female freestyle skier that finish with the highest point totals overall.

The Canada Cup Series presented by Toyo Tires is Freestyle Canada’s national competition circuit. It was created to support a competitive and sustainable domestic tour where freestyle athletes from across Canada can develop their competitive skills in all of our disciplines; Moguls, Aerials Slopestyle and Halfpipe. It is designed primarily for athletes in the Train-to-Train (T2T) and Learn & Train to Compete (L2C/T2C) in the Can Freestyle Long Term Athlete Development system.
