BC Games Society – The 2017 Canada Summer Games will kick off in Winnipeg in 100 days, and Team BC athletes are training hard to be ready for top performances. Team BC is proud to announce Olympian and Team BC alumnus, Ryan Cochrane, as our Honourary Captain for the 2017 Canada Summer Games.

Recognized as one of Canada’s most accomplished athletes, Cochrane started his journey to international success as a member of Team BC at the 2005 Canada Summer Games in Regina where he won five medals in swimming. Two years later he made his FINA World Championship debut and then won his historic bronze medal at the 2008 Olympic Games. A decorated career followed with eight world championship medals and an Olympic silver medal in 2012.

Cochrane recently announced his retirement from competitive swimming and is now embarking on a new career in business. He is eager to share his journey and wisdom gained from 20 years of competitive sport with the next generation of athletes as they prepare to represent their province at the Canada Games.

“Team BC has a very strong history at the Canada Games, and I’m delighted to be able to support our next generation of athletes,” said Cochrane. “These Games are a major stepping stone to the international level and I know our team from BC will be one of the toughest, ready to take on the rest of the country.”

Cochrane will share his experiences and advice with Team BC athletes to help inspire and motivate them to have their best performances at the 2017 Canada Summer Games.

“Competing for Team BC at the Canada Games has been an important step for many of our top Canadian athletes,” said Rob Needham, Chef de Mission for Team BC. “Ryan is a true role model for what is possible in sport and his leadership as our team captain will make a lasting impression for our athletes and coaches.”

The 2017 Canada Summer Games will take place in Winnipeg, July 28 to August 13 marking the 50th anniversary of the Canada Games.
