SASKATOON, SK — For the first time in over two years, Wrestling Canada Lutte (WCL) will be hosting a national event this weekend, Sept. 4, with the 2021 U23 and Senior World Team Trials in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Over 50 athletes and 100 coaches and support staff will participate at the event, which helps determine members of both the U23 and senior Canadian teams for the upcoming World Championships. The Senior World Championships will be Oct. 2-10 in Oslo, Norway, followed by the U23 World Championships Nov. 1-7 in Belgrade, Serbia.

“We could not be more thrilled to return to the mats this weekend in Saskatoon,” said Tamara Medwidsky, Executive Director, WCL. “We understand how challenging the pandemic has been for the entire wrestling community and we hope this is the first step in a return to a more normal competition schedule.”

The event features women’s and men’s freestyle competitions in 23 weight classes split among U23 and senior age divisions.  Each weight class is capped at a maximum of four entries and will be a single elimination tournament with winners from semi finals advancing to the final.

The event will have some star power behind it including recent Olympians Stittsville, Ontario’s Erica Wiebe and Surrey, British Columbia’s Amar Dhesi. Wiebe, the 2016 Olympic gold medalist, who trains out of the Calgary Dinos Wrestling Club, and Dhesi, Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club, will both be looking to gain momentum following Tokyo.

There will be a strong local contingent as well with nine wrestlers from the host club (Saskatoon Wrestling Club) taking part. The list includes: SueAnne Harms, Emma Parker, Berit Johnson, Natasha Fox, Katie Dutchak, Taylor Follensbee, Logan Sloan, Hunter Lee and Jackson Serna.

“We are thrilled to be hosting the WCL World Team Trials,” said Shane Bradley, coach, Saskatoon Wrestling Club. “The Saskatoon Wrestling Club and the City of Saskatoon have a history of organizing great national events and is not only preparing for a great competition but also being diligent in ensuring that this competition is safe for the athletes and volunteers. Since this will be the first time in almost a year and a half that many of Canada’s high performance and NextGen athletes will be able to compete, it should lead to some solid battles on the mat with exciting rivalries being rekindled or developed.”

Weigh-ins begin at 7 a.m. with the action getting underway at 9 a.m. at the Saskatoon Inn & Conference Centre. The final championship matches are scheduled for 7:15 p.m. A full draw can be found here.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 protocols, spectators are unable to attend in person, however, WCL will be live streaming the event. For more information or results, including the link to the livestream, visit WCL’s events section.

WCL would like to extend a special thank you to Tourism Saskatchewan for their support, as well as the Saskatoon Inn & Conference Centre and local host organizers, Saskatoon Wrestling Club.
