VNL Update: Women gain hard-fought week-two win

June 16, 2022: Canada earned a win over Belgium 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 25-22) today in Volleyball Nations League action in the Philippines.

“It was a tough game, Belgium is a very strong team but today more than any other match so far we didn’t panic over mistakes; we showed patience and maturity on court to battle out each set,” said Canada’s head coach, Shannon Winzer.

Alexa Gray (Calgary, AB) was Canada’s top scorer with 24 points, followed by Kiera Van Ryk (Surrey, BC) adding 22 points.

“After a shaky performance on Tuesday versus Thailand (Canada was swept 3-0) it was great to bounce back in this game and beat another challenger team,” explained Winzer.

Overall, Canada has three wins in VNL so far this year, after six matches. The team plays China on Friday.

Canada will host the third women’s week of the tournament, June 28 to July 03 (Seven Chiefs Sportsplex, Tsuut’ina Nation). Tickets www.showpass.com
