August 14, 2022:  After a dramatic semi-final win over USA, Canada plays in the gold-medal match of the 15th Men’s Pan American Cup at the Centre Slush Puppie in Gatineau, Quebec on Sunday.

Canada came back from a two-set deficit to win in five: 3-2 (22-25, 21-25, 29-27, 25-23, 15-12) in last night’s match.

“In the first two sets we were playing under our level,” explained Canada’s coach Dan Lewis. “We changed a couple of things and made some substitutions. Our guys kept their composure, and it was really a group effort. … We are looking forward to playing Cuba – we are the underdog, and they are a very powerful team, but we didn’t want to leave this tournament without playing them.”

In the semi, the U.S. led in attack points with 69 (compared with Canada’s 66) and opposite Jake Hanes of Team USA led all scorers with 27 points. The U.S. also led in blocking (8-6). Canada had eight service points compared to seven for the U.S. and Canada made fewer errors (28-32). For Canada, Brodie Hofer was lead scorer and contributed 22 points.

The gold-medal match on Sunday is at 5 pm local time, and the U.S. will play Chile for bronze at 2:30 pm local time.

A berth to the Pan American Games, which will be held in Santiago, Chile in 2023, is at stake at this tournament.
