In 2015 the UBC School of Kinesiology created a Certificate and Professional Masters of High Performance Coaching and Technical Leadership (MHPCTL) aimed at raising the professional and scholarly standards for sport coaches and leaders of Olympic and Paralympic athletes in Canada.

Through the delivery of a blended learning program, students from across the country attend a one week face to face and subsequent online delivery, the UBC School of Kinesiology is leading the way in coaching education both in Canada and internationally.  With the support of key stakeholders in high performance sport, the MHPCTL program has already made an impact on the Canadian sports sector. The program is highly sought after, with strong enrolment from applicants in high performance leadership roles such as head coaches, technical directors and performance directors at the national and provincial levels. Over the past 5 years the program has enrolled over 80 coaches and technical sport leaders with 46 completing the one year graduate certificate and 14 graduating with a masters degree.  By populating provincial and national sport organizations with our graduates, the program aims to raise the standard of sport as a safe, inclusive, and performance-oriented pathway for Canada’s next generation of athletes.

Targeting mature professionals who are working as full time coaches or technical leaders in their sport’s podium pathway, the UBC program includes:

  • A world class high performance curriculum taught by active practitioners in international sport science and coaching.
  • Delivered primarily on-line, with a one-week face-to-face residency at UBC June 8 to 13, 2020.
  • Flexible admission is available to coaches or technical Leaders who may lack formal post-secondary education but have prior learning experience and proven background at the provincial, national or international levels of sport.
