The Ottawa Sport Council is pleased to announce the return of the Ottawa Sport Summit after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The eighth annual Ottawa Sport Summit, Creating Diverse and Inclusive Sport Environments, will be hosted on Saturday, November 26, 2022, at the Nepean Sailing Club.

The Power of Sport: The True Sport Report 2022 indicates that 85% of Canadians believe sport participation builds stronger communities, but the report also shows that marginalized communities reported participating in sport at a lower rate than the Canadian average. For example, racialized peoples reported participation rates of 25.2% compared to the average participation rate of 26.7% in Canada.

Additionally, the intersection of multiple marginalized identities for an individual can result in the amplification of barriers to participation in sport. Marginalized identities can include visible minorities, individuals with physical disabilities, neurodivergent individuals, indigenous communities, 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

We invite you to join us for our sport summit, Creating Diverse and Inclusive Sport Environments, on Saturday, November 26, 2022, where we will collaborate to gain a deeper understanding of the lived experiences in sport and the barriers to participation faced by marginalized communities.

This year’s Sport Summit will use a facilitated workshop format to allow participants to answer the following key questions:

  • What are the lived experiences in sport of marginalized communities in Ottawa?
  • What are the barriers to participation faced by marginalized communities in sport in Ottawa?
  • What information, resources, and support do community sport organizations need to create positive and meaningful sport experiences for marginalized communities?

As always, one of the Sport Summit’s goals will be to create dialogue between attendees. In addition to generating practical solutions to creating welcoming and inclusive sport environments, you’ll have the chance to collaborate with peers and learn from the experiences of others.

This year’s sport summit is the first step in a larger project beginning this fall. The Ottawa Sport Council is fortunate to have received funding from Canadian Tire Jumpstart to develop a resource hub for community sport organizations related to equity, diversity, and inclusion. The Ottawa Sport Council will move forward in partnership with INclusion INcorporated to develop resources based on the outcomes of the sport summit.
