Triathlon Canada —Canada 1-3-5 in men’s elite, fourth in women’s elite race—

RICHMOND, Virginia — Racing in his first season as a member of Canada’s National Development Team, triathlete Martin Sobey scored his first-ever CAMTRI win at the Triathlon American Cup in Richmond, Virginia, completing the sprint distance event in 52 minutes and 38 seconds to lead the men’s field.

Since moving to Victoria from his hometown of Charlottetown, P.E.I. in 2016 to join Triathlon Canada’s National Performance Centre, the 22-year-old Sobey raced to his first CAMTRI podium in 2018, earning silver, and was named to Canada’s 2018 World Championship Team where he finished 23rd and was the nation’s top under-23 male.

“I am happy to see that the program my coaches and I have in place is paying off. I am thrilled with how the day went and even more excited for the rest of the season,” said Sobey, who put in a solid chase on the bike to establish himself in the lead pack after a decent swim.

He credited a smooth transition and a smart run – tucking in out of the wind and making his move on the final corner – for playing a part in his success over the field on Sunday.

“I trusted my final sprint and just managed to hold off my competition at the (finish) line. I have a really good team of coaches around me and we continue to train smart and progress every day. I think the main game-changer today was that I raced with a bit more aggression and confidence,” added Sobey.

Fellow U23 World Championships teammate Charles Pacquet joined Sobey on the podium, having posted a time of 52:45 to grab bronze. A native of Port Cartier, Que., Pacquet has competed at the World Championships and the Youth Olympic Games, and has two other podiums to his credit in the sprint distance – a third-place finish in the 2018 CAMTRI Sprint Triathlon American Cup in Bridgetown, Barbados, and a second-place finish at the 2018 Sprint Triathlon African Cup in Morocco.

Victoria’s Aidan Longcroft-Harris raced to fifth place in a time of 53:07.

In the women’s race, Quebec’s Karol-Ann Roy finished just off the podium, 28 seconds from third with a sprint swim-bike-run time of 59:57, settling for fourth place.

Marissa Ferrante won the women’s event with a time of 59:00. Erin Edminister was second at 59:10. Anabel Knoll topped Roy for the bronze (59:29).
