ONTARIO AND CSIO AFFILIATED ATHLETES SET TO COMPETE AT THE 2022 COMMONWEALTH GAMES

TORONTO (July 27, 2022) – Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO) would like to congratulate the 268 athletes and their coaches named to Team Canada for the 2022 Commonwealth Games taking place in Birmingham, England from July 28 to August 8, 2022. CSIO would like to recognize the 84 Ontario athletes, numerous Ontario coaches, and countless Ontario-based support staff representing Canada at the Games. Ontario athletes comprise 32% of Team Canada, the most of any province or territory!

Among the Canadian athletes competing at the Games, 70 members of the Team have received support from CSIO during their athletic career on the high performance development pathway. CSIO works or has worked with these athletes and their coaches to optimize their performance and enhance their ability to succeed on the international stage. This includes the delivery of best-in-class sport science services such as strength and conditioning, sport nutrition, mental performance, biomechanics and performance analysis, physiology, sport medicine and athletic therapy, and access to state-of-the-art training facilities.

CSIO would also like to congratulate then 30 athletes on Team Canada who have been a part of CSIO’s Ontario High Performance Sport Initiative (OHPSI) program. OHPSI is a program designed by CSIO and funded by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, to provide sport science and sport medicine services to provincial athletes who are best capable of achieving future international success on senior national teams in targeted winter and summer sports. The OHPSI investment also contributes to funding support for athlete participation in competition and training, coach / technical leadership support and professional development, and enhancing a sports’ daily training environments.

CSIO’s purpose is Elevating People & Performances and these Ontario and CSIO affiliated athletes are a testament to the best-in-class program and service delivery that CSIO provides in the pursuit of #BuildingChampions.

In May 2022, CSIO had the honour of hosting The Queen’s Baton Relay on one of only a few Canadian stops, as it made its journey to all 72 Commonwealth Nations and Territories ahead of the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The Queen’s Baton was welcomed by a group of high performance athletes training at CSIO including national team athletes from athletics, para athletics, and wheelchair basketball, and was emceed by Team Canada 2022 co-Chefs de Missions, Claire Carver-Dias and Sam Effah.

CSIO wishes all of the athletes, coaches, and support staff representing Canada the best of luck at the Commonwealth Games! We will be cheering for you – Go Canada Go!

It was wonderful having The Queen’s Baton visit CSIO in the lead up to the Games – inspiring the athletes in the final stage of preparation for the Games. CSIO would also like to recognize the outstanding work of our five staff who will be on the ground providing sport science and sport medicine support to Team Canada’s athletes, as well as those members of our staff providing support remotely.
