Sport Nova Scotia – Halifax (Friday, May 31, 2019) – Close to 600 members of the Nova Scotia sport community congregated at the Halifax convention Centre tonight as Sport Nova Scotia revealed the winners of the 2019 Support4Sport Awards. “Demanding practice schedules and travelling for games doesn’t leave much time for reflection. This is a unique opportunity to take a night off, relax and celebrate the top athletic achievements in Nova Scotia. The people here tonight have devoted so much of their lives to sport and we are humbled to honour them,” said Jamie Ferguson, CEO of Sport Nova Scotia.

The annual event honoured the achievements of over 230 athletes, coaches, officials, sponsors and volunteers from sport organizations province-wide. “Every single nominee should be proud of their accomplishments in sport” said Bob MacKinnon, President & CEO of the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation. “As Nova Scotians, we’re proud to celebrate the hard work, dedication and excellence of these individuals.”

The Support4Sport Awards judging process

Provincial sport organizations (PSO’s) submit one nominee per category. These are the “PSO winners”. Winners for each sport can then go forward for the overall award in the same category (across all sports). There were two committees who reviewed all of the selections. These volunteer committees are comprised of leaders of the provincial sport organizations, representatives from the Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic, members of the media, Sport Nova Scotia’s board of directors and community sport stakeholders. The first committee looked at the nominee’s most outstanding performance of the past year, this is worth 60% of the nominee’s overall score, then the top five candidates in each category advanced to the second committee. Members of the second committee looked at the whole picture-the year overall, past successes, obstacles, the competitive field and any other outstanding considerations. The second committee’s mark was worth the other 40% of the nominee’s overall score.

Funds are raised through the sale of designated lottery products. Each time one of those products are sold, 100 per cent of the proceeds help Nova Scotians get in the game. Since its inception, the program has helped raise over $38 million. Support4Sport is the largest source of funding for amateur sport in Nova Scotia.
