National Bereavement Day – Tools for Loss Literacy

It’s National Bereavement Day in Canada and we are delighted that Sport Law Partner Dina Bell-Laroche has been invited to speak by the Canadian Hospice and Palliative Care Association (CPHCA) to Members of Parliament on the importance of a national bereavement strategy. Her new book Grief Unleashed: Moving from the Hole in our Hearts to Whole-hearted is a call to inspired action that invites all of us to become more grief and loss informed.

“Understanding grief and loss is of vital importance to all of us, and especially parents, caregivers and people in positions of authority over children and youth,” shared Bell-Laroche. “In sport, we tend to focus on outcomes like wins and losses which can create unnecessary pressure on young people. The research on grief and loss in sport is nascent and I’m excited about furthering this work by working alongside innovative partners and other passionate advocates for healthier child development through a trauma and grief informed lens.”

To continue to elevate the grief and loss literacy of sport leaders, coaches and athletes, Sport Law has developed a one-day Grief Essentials workshop that provides fundamental grief and loss literacy including relevant grief theories, understanding coping styles, how to companion others, and where to access helpful support and resources. The workshop will be held on January 17, 2024 and includes a workbook, list of helpful resources, and an immersive experience to better support your understanding of vital thanatological topics.

Here’s what one sport participant had to say about the workshop: “We don’t often pause to think about loss other than maybe when someone dies. There has been so much loss during Covid and now with other world events, and this workshop brings new awareness about loss and the grief that occurs naturally afterwards, whether it be the loss of a relationship, a job, a dream, etc. I learned to not be so afraid in my own experience of grief and actually leaning into it is powerful. I feel better equipped to be with and companion someone in their grief journey.”
