Diving Canada – Jennifer Abel and François Imbeau-Dulac closed the Montreal FINA Diving World Series with a bronze medal for Canada, in the mixed 3m springboard on Sunday. 

The pair combined for 310.89 points, and were beaten by silver medallists Tom Daley and Grace Reid of Great Britain who amassed 314.10 points, while Yang Hao and Chang Yani of China were just ahead with 318.15 points in a close competition. 

The bronze saves the day for the home country, after both Abel, from Laval, Que., and Montreal’s Pamela Ware were held off the podium in the women’s 3m springboard. 

The 27 year-old Abel was fourth-place with 331.75 points, 45 behind the winner, Wang Han of China. Ware, 26, finished fifth with 309.10 points. 

“Today was a hard day for me, I mean I know I can do much better, training was good, even the training before competition was awesome too,” said Abel,  “Sometimes little mistakes can happen in competition but I’m most proud of my technique, it was great today and it’s only small mistakes at the bottom that I will have to fix.”

In the men’s 10m platform final, Beaconsfield, Que.’s Vincent Riendeau was fifth with 469.55 points.

“It gives me a bit of confidence for my forward entry dives and also shows me a few things I still have to work on and perfect so it gives me a lot of motivation and confidence for the world championships,” said the 22 year-old Olympian, looking ahead to this summer’s big show in Gwangju, South Korea.

“There will be a lot more divers at the world championships, so a lot more competition but it helps us understand what we’re able to do and what where we’re able to rank more or less.”

The Canadian team will now prepare for the fourth FINA Diving World Series of the season in Kazan, Russia held May 10 to 12.
