OTTAWA – Tyler Black (Stouffville, Ontario) took the honour of being the first Canadian selected in the 2021 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft when the Milwaukee Brewers selected the second baseman in the Competitive Balance Round A, 33rd overall out of Wright State University.

Black had a tremendous junior season at Wright State in 2021 where he started in all 48 games and hit .383 with 13 home runs, 56 RBI and an OPS of 1.179. He also stole 11 bases in 12 attempts.

A multi-sport athlete who attended St. Andrew’s College in Aurora, Ontario, Black was active in hockey and football as a youth and was a member of the Toronto Mets Baseball Club prior to attending Wright State.

He played for Team Ontario at the 2016 Baseball Canada Cup in Fort McMurray, Alberta and was a two-time participant in the Blue Jays Academy Showcase.

Black is the son of award-winning Canadian sports broadcaster, Rod Black.

The MLB Draft will continue with rounds two through ten on July 12th beginning at 1pm ET followed by rounds 11 to 20 on July 13th beginning at Noon ET.
