March Newsletter: What is Your Role?

What is your role?

In honour of International Women’s Day this year, we asked sport leaders to consider the question “What is your role?” when it comes to advocating for women and girls in sport.

The world we woke up in on March 8th to celebrate International Women’s Day was not the world we woke up in this morning, or even last week. The consequences of COVID-19 in sport have been nothing short of heartbreaking, and the question “What is your role?” has taken on a different meaning as we’re all working to figure out how to best support our loved ones and the communities, sport and otherwise, that mean so much to us.

Strong, inclusive leadership is as important now as it has ever been. We believe that gender equity powers better sport – and while priorities can and should be shifting in this moment, our goal is still to keep building a better sport system for women and girls and for all Canadians.

At our International Women’s Day Event in Ottawa, we asked sport leaders to share their commitments to women and girls in sport. We loved reading your thoughts and hope you can find some inspiration in these statements to keep pushing forward

I commit…
to challenging complacency while also being empatheticTo bringing visibility to barriers impacting marginalized communitiesTo calling someone in instead of calling someone out – welcoming people to work together to advance physical activity and sport to leading by example and staying true to my values To ongoing and continuous learning To asking questions and being an ally To starting small and doing something (however little) each day

#ICommit

We partnered with CBC Sports to spark discussion and action with our International Women’s Day #ICommit campaign. Check out the video commitments that athletes, coaches, and broadcasters made to keeping girls in sport – including thoughts from Perdita Felicien, Jennifer Heil, Andre De Grasse, and Scott Russel!
