Sport Manitoba – Sept. 27, 2019 – WINNIPEG, MB – The Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association is excited to announce that long-time Winnipeg Sun and Brandon Sun reporter Kirk Penton will be inducted into the Manitoba Media Roll of Honour this year.
Penton will be inducted on Nov. 2 during the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame’s 40th Anniversary Dinner at the Victoria Inn.
Penton began his sportswriting career in the 90s at the Brandon Sun and cut his teeth covering Brandon University sports and Brandon Wheat Kings hockey before moving to Winnipeg in 2002. He was quickly moved onto the Winnipeg Blue Bombers beat, where he made a name for himself with terrific writing and insightful reporting.
Penton became a fixture on the CFL beat in Winnipeg for 15 years and established himself as an insider and expert on not only the team, but the entire league. He was the national CFL columnist for Sun Media and Postmedia for many years, providing information no other journalists were able to uncover.
He also covered the Winnipeg Jets, the NFL and professional golf, including the U.S. Open, for the Postmedia chain.
Though he left the Winnipeg Sun and the chain in 2016, Penton still works as a journalist in British Columbia and writes about the CFL for The Athletic website.
The Manitoba Media Roll of Honour was established in 1986 and has 65 members, including local luminaries such as ‘Cactus’ Jack Wells, Jack Matheson, Don Wittman, Bob Picken, Scott Oake, Rod Black, Bob Irving, Ed Tait and Paul Edmonds.
Tickets are on sale now for the induction ceremonies and can be purchased on the Sport Manitoba website or by calling 204-925-5736.
