Gymnastics Canada – GATINEAU, QC (February 3, 2018) – Gymnastics Canada is honoured to announce our award winners in women’s artistic gymnastics for 2018. The winners were presented with their awards on Sunday afternoon as part of the 2019 Elite Canada competition that took place at Centre sportif de Gatineau in Gatineau, QC.

WOMEN’S ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS SENIOR ATHLETE & COACH OF THE YEAR:

Ellie Black (Halifax, NS). COACH: David Kikuchi

Ellie Black from the Halifax Alta Gymnastics Club in Halifax, NS helped lead Canada’s women’s artistic gymnastics team to a record high placing of fourth at the 2018 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Doha, QAT where she also qualified for all four apparatus finals and the all-around competition where she finished 12th

At the Paris World Challenge Cup in September she medaled on all four apparatus with a gold on beam, silver on vault and floor, and bronze on bars. Earlier in 2018 she was a member of Canada’s gold medal-winning team at the 2018 Commonwealth Games where she was also crowned Commonwealth Champion in the all-around competition and took silver on vault.

WOMEN’S ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS JUNIOR ATHLETES & COACHES OF THE YEAR:

Emma Spence (Cambridge, ON). COACHES: Elvira Saadi, Denis Vachon

Emma Spence from Dynamo Gymnastics in Cambridge, ON was Team Canada’s closing ceremonies flag bearer at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires where she also won a bronze medal on vault. Spence was chosen for the tremendous team engagement and spirit she displayed during the Games and for her active participation in the educational programs promoting Olympism and its values at the Games. Spence was also a member of Canada’s silver medal-winning team at the 2018 Junior Pan American Championships and the Pacific Rim Championships.

QUOTE: “This honour means so much to me since I’ve been working really hard for the past year while I was a junior to make my routines have better difficulty and execution and it was all paying off throughout the competitions last year. I was able to have so much fun while doing all of those competitions as well which makes it even better because I had the best time.”

Zoé Allaire-Bourgie (Montreal, QC). COACHES : Katerine Dussault, Pierre Privé, Francine Bouffard

Too young to attend the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, Zoé Allaire-Bourgie of Montreal, QC won four medals at the 2018 Junior Pan Am Championships including gold on beam, and at the 2018 Pacific Rim Championships she won five medals. She was also the 2018 Canadian junior all-around, beam, and bars champion.

QUOTE: “I’m very proud because I had a great season, and so I’m happy to be the best junior gymnast along with Emma – she’s an amazing gymnast. I was most proud of winning the Canadian Championships title because I worked really hard for it. This year, I’m really looking forward to making the team for the Junior World Championships.”
