Are you a wrestler and looking for your next match? Join us at the 2023 NAIG! 

Registration is OPEN, and we are now taking applications for a chance to compete for Team BC in the sport of Wrestling at the Halifax, North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) this July 15-23, 2023. 

ELIGIBLE ATHLETES: 

Male and Female Indigenous youth (First Nations, Métis, Inuit), born between 2004 to 2008. The weight classes are as follows:

TEAM BC FUN FACTS

Did you know that during the Toronto 2017 North American Indigenous Games, Team BC won the Overall Team Title, winning a total of 179 medals (67 gold, 58 Silver, 54 bronze)?

Team BC won medals in 12 out of the 13 sports in which we competed, which put the team in first place, 12 medals ahead of Team Saskatchewan.  

This is the second time Team BC has won the Overall Team Title (awarded to the team with the highest number of medals won) at the NAIG. Here’s to hopefully working toward our third Overall Team Title at the 2023 NAIG this July! 

QUICK REMINDERS

Softball 

Our FINAL Team BC NAIG Softball Regional Selection Camp is happening on February 11, in Vernon. Check-In for all Female Teams is at 8:30 am; on-field from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, and Check-In for all Male Teams is at 12:30 pm; on-field from 12:30pm to 3:30 pm.

Eligible athletes include: Male and Female Indigenous youth (First Nations, Inuit, Métis) between 12 and 18 years old (born between 2004-2010).

Badminton 

The BC Indigenous Provincial Badminton Development Camp is taking place on Sunday, February 26, 2023 in North Vancouver, BC. 

The Camp is open to all male and female Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, Inuit) youth.

Canoe & Kayak

The 2023 BC Indigenous Provincial Canoe/Kayak Championships are taking place on March 4-5, 2023 at Loudon Park at Long Lake in Nanaimo, BC. 
 

Eligible athlete include: Male and Female Indigenous youth (First Nations, Métis, Inuit), born between 2004 to 2010. 

The Championships will serve as an athlete identification event as we work towards selecting our team for the 2023 NAIG.

Five (5) regional selection camps took place in October and November 2022. The Provincial Selection Camp took place November 26/27, 2022. Thank you to all athletes, coaches and volunteers who supported the event. The athlete turnout and regional representation was great!

IMPORTANT NOTE: COVID-19 VACCINATION POLICY FOR 2023 NAIG

2023 NAIG has a COVID-19 vaccination policy for all athletes, coaches, chaperones, mission staff and other participants. 
This Policy on Mandatory COVID-19 Vaccines for all participants has been developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its objective is to maintain the health and safety of NAIG participants and other stakeholders who engage in the 2023 NAIG. This policy has been created and will be in effect for the duration of the 2023 NAIG event. 

ABSENTEE FORM

Athletes who, for extenuating circumstances, are unable to participate in the Camp / Championships and would like to be considered for Team BC must do the following:

  1. First register for the camp that they would be attending and pay the registration fee. NOTE: You must apply for an absentee status prior to registration closing (two (2) days before the start of the camp).
  2. Then, apply for “Absentee” consideration by emailing teambc@isparc.ca. Please note extenuating circumstances may include injury, illness, domestic affliction, conflict with a major competition / event, forest fires, etc.). Absentee forms are put before the Provincial Sport Committee for consideration. Submitting an absentee form does not guarantee the athlete will move forward to the next round.

ABOUT 2023 NAIG

NAIG will be the largest multi-sport and cultural event ever to be held in Atlantic Canada. More than 5,000 athletes, coaches and team staff from 756 Indigenous nations will take part in cultural celebrations, and compete in 16 sports across 21 venues, with the help of 3,000 volunteers. 2020 NAIG was originally due to take place from July 12 to 18, 2020 in Kjipuktuk (Halifax), and Millbrook First Nation, Nova Scotia and has now been set to take place July 15 to 23, 2023. Team BC has taken part in every NAIG since its inception in 1990. We look forward to bringing another outstanding team to Halifax. Did you know, at the 2014 NAIG in Regina, Saskatchewan, Team BC made history as the first team to be awarded both the Overall Team Award (for most medals) and the John Fletcher Spirit Award for being voted team with most integrity and sportsmanship. Let’s keep the tradition going!
