Gymnastics Canada – LANGLEY, BC (July 20, 2019) – Félix Dolci of Laval, QC bounced back from his silver-medal winning performance in the junior all-around competition on Friday night at the 2019 Elite Canada competition in men’s artistic gymnastics to capture gold on five out of six apparatus during the apparatus finals on Saturday in Langley, BC. His Laval Excellence teammate – William Émard, was the top senior – capturing gold on floor and vault, and silver on rings.

For Dolci, who was recently crowned the junior world champion on rings, and silver medallist on floor – this competition marks his final competition before moving up into the senior ranks next year where he’ll be trying to make the Olympic team should Canada be successful in qualifying a team this fall at the World Championships.

“It means a lot to me to move up to the seniors next year as it means I’m going to have to improve a lot of my D scores, and my final scores which will be much more important. I’m going to have increase on pommel for sure,” said Dolci. “But for today, everything went much better than yesterday, and I was pretty proud of my rings – I defended my title, and stuck my dismount.”

Patrick Talbot of Quispamsis, NB won the other gold medal on high bar, and also captured silver on pommel horse to go along with the bronze medal he won in the all-around competition on Friday.

“These results were outstanding. I was surprised to find out how good I did this weekend, as I almost thought I wouldn’t be coming to this competition because of an injury (a finger fracture),” said Talbot who is competing in his first year of the 16-17 age category.

Émard is also coming back from an injury to his shoulder so he was very happy with golds on vault and floor, but most pleased with his silver medal rings performance: “I’ve only been doing my rings routine for about a week, and I hadn’t had a clean routine like I would like. This was actually the first clean routine I’ve hit, so it was really nice, and the feeling after that ring routine was awesome.”

Cory Paterson of Montreal, QC was the only other multiple medallist in the senior competition, capturing gold on the parallel bars and high bar – giving him a boost of confidence as he gears up for the Pan Am Games that he, along with Rene Cournoyer of Repentigny, QC, Zach Clay of Chilliwack, BC, Sam Zakutney of Ottawa, ON, and Justin Karstadt of Etobicoke, ON will be departing for on Sunday.

“My goals for the team event at Pan Ams are to just go in and get the highest team score, and depending on how the other teams do, hopefully putting us in medal contention. And then hopefully we can get a couple of guys in the all-around finals and event finals and hopefully win some medals for Canada.”
