Diving Canada – Mia Vallée of Beaconsfield, Que., and Peter Thach Mai of Montreal are all in the chase for medals after the first two days of diving competition at the World University Games.

On the women’s side, Dick and Vallée won their respective semifinals in the 10-m tower and one-metre springboard on Wednesday

On women’s tower, Dick, was the top semifinalist with 291.00 points. Nayun Moon of South Korea is second at 289.90 and Alejandra Estrella of Mexico third at 285.35. Dick was fourth after the prelims with 263.50.

‘’I’m happy with preliminaries and semis,’’ said Dick, a kinesiology student at the University of Toronto. ‘’I was relatively consistent. I missed my inward in the semis and was a bit off the reverse in prelims. I look forward to the opportunity to correct those mistakes in the final.’’

On women’s one-metre, the semis were split in two groups of five with the top-three advancing to the final. Vallée, a science student at College de Maisonneuve in Montreal,  placed first in her heat with 228.60 points, the third best score overall.

After struggling on one-metre Tuesday, Thach Mai qualified fifth for the men’s three-metre semifinal on Wednesday with 381.75 points.

‘’I slept better last night so that helped,’’ said Thach Mai, a human sciences student at Ahuntsic College in Montreal. ‘’During the competition we were in a waiting room and my coach (Stéphane Lapointe) recommended I go outside and get some fresh air. I was less stressed today and more consistent in my diving.’’

Competition continues Thursday with the women’s 10-m and one-metre finals and the men’s three-metre semifinals.
