Canadian Olympic Committee – LIMA, PERU – Supporting diversity and inclusion in the sport community is a priority for the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC). On Thursday, members of the COC helped support the launch of Peru’s first-ever Pride House organized by Movimento Homosexual de LIma, Valetodo Downtown and the Canadian Embassy in Peru. Team Canada saw a light schedule on Day 6 at LIma 2019. Canada dominated the badminton field and will have five opportunities for a gold medal. Diving and cycling started their Games campaign with a gold and silver medal, respectively.

DAY 6 HIGHLIGHTS:

• COC supports launch of first-ever Pride House in Peru;
• Canada won 7 badminton matches and will all have an opportunity at 5 gold medals on Day 7;
• RBC Training Ground athlete Kelsey Mitchell and her sprint teammate Amelia Walsh win silver on opening night of track cycling.

Jennifer ABEL (Gold Medallist: Diving – Women’s 3m synchronized springboard) on dancing around on pool deck while doing her warm up:

“We came here to have fun and do as well as we can. Next year is going to be a really tough one with the Olympics coming, so we just want to enjoy ourselves here in Lima.”

Pamela WARE (Gold Medallist: Diving – Women’s 3m synchronized springboard) on performing together with partner Jennifer ABEL to win gold, having finished fourth as a pair at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games:

“It was a blast from the past. Today I felt really good and I think she did too.”

Rachel HONDERICH (Women’s Badminton) on advancing to the women’s singles gold medal match, where she will face fellow Canadian Michelle LI, as well as the women’s double match:

“Very exciting to be in two finals tomorrow. It’s really exciting to secure two golds, two silvers or one of each so I’m really happy right now. Yeah, it’s good to be back against the Michelle again four years later  and show that Canada is still at the top. Michelle is coming off her ass really good performances internationally. So as always, I know she’ll be a really strong opponent. I hope I can play well.”

Maggie COLES-LYSTER (Cycling – Track) on what the team needs to do to stay on top of the podium in the cycling – track team pursuit after catching Mexico to advance to the gold medal final on Friday:

“When our technical execution is there, everyone is able to settle and ride well together, there is no panic and we just come into this with confidence. And I think that’s exactly what we need to show up with tomorrow night, calm, confident, go in and crush that final ride.”

Maggie COLES-LYSTER (Cycling – Track) on the team’s dynamic: 

“So most of us have gone through juniors together, three of us.  So we’ve been riding together for four years now. Then Miriam, she joined us last year on the track and just the way our personalities have been and the girls are super open and kind, nice people and we have fun. Make sure every everywhere we go we have fun. And I think that’s the key to like, take it seriously, but when you’re not on the track racing, even on the track racing enjoy the race and enjoy the experience.”

Amelia WALSH (Silver Medallist: Cycling – Track – Women’s Team Sprint) on her silver medal performance with teammate Kelsey MITCHELL:

“We took a pretty big risk and put me up about four inches on the front to see if we could get any time back. I think with the conditions of the track, it wasn’t a bad ride for us as a team. I’m quite proud of it. A medal is a medal, I’ll take it. I competed in TORONTO 2015 in BMX and it wasn’t good at all, so this is a very big step up. I’m really happy.”
