VICTORIA (March 13, 2023) – Surf Canada is proud to announce the addition of the Canadian Union of Skilled Workers (CUSW) to their family of partners. In a multi-year partnership agreement, CUSW will be the first Exclusive Union Partner of Surf Canada, the National Surfing Team, and the National Para-Surfing Team as well as the first Official Equality Partner of Surf Canada.

“CUSW is thrilled about our new relationship with Surf Canada,” said First Vice President Tom MacLean.  “Our union is highlighting the advantages of rewarding and well-paid work in the skilled trades to young women and men across the country.  Surf Canada is enjoying a growing popularity among young people, and CUSW believes it’s an ideal match with our goals of promoting equity and social justice, and supporting surfers and para surfers throughout Canada.”

This partnership will see CUSW provide resources and support to Surf Canada, especially to the women’s and para-surfing programs.

“We are very excited to have CUSW on board with us at Surf Canada,” said Dom Domic, Surf Canada Executive Director. “CUSW and Surf Canada share the values of inclusion, equality, and diversity, and we’re excited to work together to strengthen Canada’s surfing culture.”

The new partnership will also lend support to Surf Canada’s premier annual event, the Rip Curl CANAM Surfing Championships, set to be held in Tofino, BC from April 14-16, 2023. As part of the partnership, CUSW will act as a supporting sponsor of the Championships.

About CUSW

CUSW is a proudly independent, democratic union representing thousands of skilled trades workers throughout Canada.  Founded in 1999, it was created as a new kind of organization where young workers had a voice in determining the future of their union, and their careers.  CUSW is structured democratically from the bottom up, and dedicated to membership participation, the protection of workers’ rights, and social justice for all.
