Sport Nova Scotia – (Halifax, June 11, 2019)- Kai Dwyer is the male individual Athlete of the Month for June. The 18-year-old gymnast participated at the Canadian Elite national competition where he won a gold medal in individual trampoline. The competition hosted over 250 of Canada’s national-level and high-performance athletes.

Ellie Black is the female individual athlete of the month for June. Ellie competed in the Canadian Artistic Gymnastics Championships where she won three golds, one silver and one bronze. This was Ellie’s sixth consecutive all-around win at the Canadian Championships.  

Oliver Pye is the male team athlete of the month for June. Oliver competed at the 2019 senior national goalball championships where he led his team to a bronze medal by scoring 17 goals.

Shams Hamad is the female team athlete of the month for June. The 17-year-old goalball player competed at the 2019 senior national goalball championships where her team finished in fourth place. This year was Shams’ first year on the Nova Scotia senior women’s team and she scored two goals.

The Halifax Aqua Nova Stream 11-12 year olds team is the team athlete of the month for June. The artistic swimming squad competed at the Atlantic Canadian regional championships where they won a gold medal for their team routine. The competition hosted over 250 athletes and took place in Saint John, NB.

About Athlete of the Month

The Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards. A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
