Gymnastics Canada – LIMA, PER (Aug 4, 2019) – The Canadian trampoline team took to the competition floor at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, PER on Sunday, and despite some challenges, Jérémy Chartier of Montreal, QC, Sarah Milette of Longueuil, QC, and Samantha Smith of Vancouver, BC have all qualified for the finals on Monday.

Jason Burnett of Toronto, ON was the first competitor up on the trampoline for the compulsory routines, and unfortunately travelled too far on his fourth skill and hit the side of the trampoline, ending his routine. In his optional routine, he performed brilliantly and had the second highest score of 56.475, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to make up for his compulsory score, and he finished the day in 10th position with a total score of 83.770. He did not advance to the finals.

“It’s not my place here to make excuses. It was a bad competition and that’s the way it goes sometimes,” said Burnett who finished fourth at the 2015 Pan American Games. “My goals were to come here and compete three strong routines and to share the experience with my teammates.”

Chartier also had trouble in his compulsory routine, and bounced out before completing it. In his optional routine though, he too came back strong, and garnered the fourth highest score of the day to finish in sixth position with a total score of 98.100, advancing to the finals.

“Today was pretty bumpy, but in the end I qualified for finals, which was my main goal, so I’m pretty happy about that. Tomorrow my only goal is to finish the routine that I intend to do – as clean and as centered as possible. For the rest, we’ll see,” said Chartier.

For the women, Milette and Smith completed both of their routines, and enter the finals ranked first and fourth respectively. Milette scored a total of 100.010 while Smith scored 98.905.

“It was a little bit of a battle today, the equipment was a little bit crazy, so it was just about managing that, and my performance was good enough for finals, and it’s a fresh start for finals, so I’m really excited to throw down a nice routine tomorrow,” said Smith who captured her first senior Canadian title last weekend at the Canadian Championships.

“I was really happy and surprised to be in first after the two routines I did today,” said Milette. “My first was pretty good, but in my second I had to change some skills to make it easier, but I’m really happy with how I did. I’ll do my full difficulty tomorrow, and hopefully jump a little bit higher.”

The men’s finals will start at 6pm ET Monday, with the women’s finals starting at 6:40pm ET.
