CALGARY, AB (March 16, 2019) – Athletes from Canada’s senior men’s artistic gymnastics national team dominated the apparatus finals at the University of Calgary International Competition (UCIC) on Saturday, taking gold on four out of the six apparatus.

Jackson Payne from Calgary, AB continued his good form from the all-around competition on Friday night where he won the silver medal – taking gold on the parallel bars with a score of 14.666, and silver on the pommel horse with a score of 13.933. He also finished fourth on floor and rings.

“Yesterday was quite nerve-racking for me so I was glad to get that over with,” said Payne who trains out of the Calgary Gymnastics Centre. “Today I came in a little more comfortable, and a little more confident in myself, and I’m glad I was able to hit some routines.”

Thierry Pellerin from Lévis, QC showed off the form that saw him reach the podium twice in World Challenge Cups last year on the pommel horse, taking gold with a score of 14.500. Team Canada actually owned the podium in the pommel horse finals with Justin Karstadt of Toronto taking the bronze medal behind Payne.

Ryan Oehrlein of Georgetown, ON edged Chris Kaji of Mississauga, ON for the gold on rings with a score of 14.300 (Kaji scored a 14.266), and University of Calgary Gymnastics Club teammates Wolfe Gazer and Damien Cachia took gold and silver on vault with scores of 13.750 and 12.566 respectively. Team USA athletes filled the podium in the floor final, with Sean Melton taking the gold. Melton also took gold on the high bar.

In the junior competition, Félix Dolci of Laval, QC dominated, taking home gold medals on the pommel horse, rings, and parallel bars. Last night’s junior all-around winner Evgeny Siminiuc of Mississauga, ON, took gold on vault and silver on rings and parallel bars, while Anthony Balan of Laval, QC took gold on floor and bronze on high bar. Noah Royer of Grasswood, SK took the gold on high bar.

“I’m pretty happy with the results,” said Dolci who came into the competition with an injury so only competed on four events. “I think we were pretty much aiming for these results – sadly, I fell on my last event – the high bar, but I think bad luck and mistakes happen here and there so that’s fine. Overall I’m pretty happy with the results and I enjoyed the competition.”

Also winning multiple medals in the junior competition were Dorian Doan of Mississauga, ON with a silver on floor and high bar, and Nathaniel Gilroy of Waterloo, ON who took bronze on pommel horse, and tied for silver on vault.

Next up for the men’s artistic team is a World Cup in Doha, QAT next week where Pellerin will be competing on pommel horse, followed by a junior competition in Berlin. The Canadian Championships will be the next major domestic competition and will take place from May 23-26 in Ottawa, ON.
