OBERTSDORF, Germany (September 24, 2022) – Canada’s Keegan Messing launched his 2022-23 season with a gold medal in men’s competition at the Nebelhorn Trophy, a stop on the ISU Challenger Series circuit, which concluded on Saturday. Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps of Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que., added another victory as Canadians marched four times to the podium. Canada also won the Fritz Geiger Memorial Trophy as the top country at the competition ahead of Ukraine and Germany.

Messing was third after the short program but roared to top spot on Friday with the best free skate to finish with 245.74 points. Sihyeong Lee of South Korea took the silver with 235.71 and Roman Sadovsky of Vaughan, Ont., won the bronze with 222.74.

‘’Tensions were high this week,’’ said Messing, a two-time Olympian. ‘’It was a constant battle to overcome the nerves. In the short program, the nerves won. In the free skate I was able to conquer them and put out a solid performance.’’

Sadovksy, 23, was first after the short program.

‘’I struggled with the short last season, so it was nice to start off with a really strong short,’’ he said. ‘’The long wasn’t quite what I wanted but I think I just need a little more mileage and, hopefully as the season progresses, it will improve.’’

In pairs, Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps, moved from second after the short program to win the gold with the top free skate totalling 192.74. Alisa Efimova and Ruben Blommaert of Germany were second at 186.17 and their compatriots Annika Hocke and Robert Kunkel third at 184.47.

‘’It wasn’t perfect, but we stayed together,’’ said Stellato-Dudek. ‘’We came here really prepared and we think we put out two really solid performances to start the season.’’

The fourth medal for Canada was won on Saturday by Carolane Soucisse of Chateauguay, Que., and Shane Firus of North Vancouver, B.C., with the bronze in ice dancing. They totalled 73.23 points with Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson of Great Britain earning the gold with 85.80 and Allison Reed and Saulius Ambrulevicius of Lithuania the silver at 78.98.

‘’It’s nice to be back on the podium and it’s where I think we should be,’’ said Soucisse. ‘’We skated with confidence and attacked.’’

Molly Lanaghan and Dmitre Razgulajevs of Scarborough, Ont., were fourth. World championship silver medallist Loena Hendrickx of Germany won the women’s event with Canadian champion Madeline Schizas of Oakville, Ont., placing fifth.

OBERTSDORF, Allemagne (le 24 septembre 2022) – Le Canadien Keegan Messing a commencé sa saison 2022-2023 en remportant une médaille d’or à l’épreuve masculine du Nebelhorn Trophy, une étape du circuit ISU Challenger Series, qui s’est terminée samedi. Le couple Deanna Stellato-Dudek et Maxime Deschamps, de Vaudreuil-Dorion (Québec), a remporté une autre victoire quand les Canadiens sont montés pour la quatrième fois sur le podium. Le Canada a également remporté le prix Trophée commémoratif Fritz Geiger à titre de meilleur pays de la compétition devant l’Ukraine et l’Allemagne.

Messing était au troisième rang après le programme court, mais s’est hissé au sommet vendredi avec le meilleur programme libre pour terminer la compétition avec 245,74 points. Sihyeong Lee, de Corée du Sud, a gagné la médaille d’argent avec 235,71 points, tandis que Roman Sadovsky, de Vaughan (Ontario), a remporté la médaille de bronze avec 222,74 points.

« Il y avait beaucoup de tension cette semaine », a déclaré Messing, olympien à deux reprises. « La lutte a été constante pour surmonter nos nerfs. Au programme court, ce sont les nerfs qui ont gagné. Pour le programme libre, j’ai eu le meilleur sur eux et j’ai effectué une solide performance. »

Sadovksy, 23 ans, était premier après le programme court.

« La saison dernière, j’ai eu de la difficulté avec le programme court, donc c’était bien de commencer en force cette fois-ci », a-t-il affirmé. « Je n’ai pas tout à fait exécuté le programme long comme je le voulais, mais je pense que j’ai juste besoin de l’effectuer encore un peu plus, et avec un peu de chance, au fur et à mesure que la saison avance, je vais l’améliorer. »

En couples, Stellato-Dudek et Deschamps sont passés de la deuxième place après le programme court à la victoire grâce au meilleur programme libre qui leur a permis d’obtenir un total de 192,74 points. Les Allemands Alisa Efimova et Ruben Blommaert ont terminé deuxièmes avec 186,17 points et leurs compatriotes Annika Hocke et Robert Kunkel se sont classés troisièmes avec 184,47 points.

« Ce n’était pas parfait, mais nous avons patiné ensemble », a déclaré Stellato-Dudek. « Nous sommes arrivés ici en étant bien préparés et nous pensons avoir réalisé deux performances vraiment solides pour commencer la saison. »

Samedi, Carolane Soucisse, de Châteauguay (Québec), et Shane Firus, de North Vancouver (Colombie-Britannique), ont remporté la quatrième médaille pour le Canada, soit le bronze en danse sur glace. Ils ont obtenu un total de 73,23 points derrière Lilah Fear et Lewis Gibson de Grande-Bretagne qui ont gagné l’or avec 85,80 points et Allison Reed et Saulius Ambrulevicius de Lituanie qui ont remporté l’argent avec 78,98 points.

« C’est agréable d’être de retour sur le podium, car c’est là que je pense que nous devrions être », a déclaré Soucisse. « Nous avons patiné avec confiance et avons été d’attaque. »

Molly Lanaghan et Dmitre Razgulajevs, de Scarborough (Ontario), ont terminé quatrièmes. Chez les femmes, l’Allemande Loena Hendrickx, médaillée d’argent aux championnats du monde, a remporté l’épreuve. La championne canadienne Madeline Schizas, d’Oakville (Ontario), s’est classée cinquième.
