MEDELLIN, CO – 5 Canadian archers took to the shooting line today at the fourth World Cup stage in Medellin, Colombia. All athletes took part in the recurve competition, with 4 men and 1 woman making up the team. There was some wind on the field today, challenging the archers.

Eric Peters shot a score of 652, placing 38th in the field of competitors; he will move on to face Ken Sanchez Antoku from Spain on July 22 at 3:13 pm EST. Devaang Gupta finished with a score of 645, which places him against Woo Soek Lee of Korea.

“It was both a tricky day for wind and technical factors,” recounts Peters to National Recurve Coach, Shawn Riggs. “Having technical items to work on in this environment is especially challenging. We know the progress is coming and we’re looking forward to what is coming up next. There is still lots of opportunity in the matches and the technical improvements continue.”

Brandon Xuereb landed in 68th place with his score of 636 and Andrew Smollett ended the day with a score of 624 and a placement of 75th; unfortunately, neither moved on to the elimination rounds. The Canadian men’s team, composed of Peters, Gupta, and Xuereb, will face off against Chile on July 21 at 10:15 am EST. They ranked 14th and the Chilean team qualified in 19th.

Stephanie Barrett, the sole female Canadian archer in Medellin, shot a 630 and landed the 46th spot. She’ll face off against Denisa Barankova of Slovakia on July 22 at 3:13 pm EST. Barrett and Peters will combine to form Canada’s mixed team with their combined score of 1282. Their first opponent will be Colombia, who ranked one spot above them in the qualification round. This will take place on July 22 at 10:15 am EST.

The fourth stage of the World Cup will continue tomorrow with the recurve men’s team event in the morning.
