Canada’s men’s team is second at NORCECA Champs
CHARLESTON, West Virginia (Sept. 10, 2023) – Canada took silver at the NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship, held at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.
The United States beat Canada 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-22) in Sunday night’s gold-medal match.
“We were in the final, which is good,” said Canada’s head coach Tuomas Sammelvuo, whose team beat Cuba yesterday to reach the gold-medal match. “Today the U.S. was very strong, but we could do a lot better. … We lost the game in service and passing .. we couldn’t stop the speed of their offense and we were struggling with our attacking. We will analyze this tournament, go back, and get ready for the Olympic qualification. We’ll get back to work!”
Veteran U.S. opposite Matt Anderson scored a match-high 16 points. Canada’s Stephen Maar (Aurora, ON) led the Canadian side with 12 points.
USA led in attack points (44-31), blocks (5-3), and took 23 points from Canada’s errors (compared with 18). Canada has one more service ace (4-3) than the winning side.
