CLERMONT, U.S.A.—Canada’s Dominika Jamnicky stormed into the 2020 triathlon season by winning a silver medal at the PATCO Sprint Triathlon Panamerican Cup in Clermont, Florida on Saturday.

The 27-year-old took advantage of brilliant race conditions to clock a second-place time of 59:04.

“It was a great day of racing for all of the Canucks,” beamed the Guelph, Ont. product. “I’m very proud of each and every one who lined up representing the maple leaf.”

Jamnicky exercised her race tactics to near perfection through the 500-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike course and five-kilometre sprint run to the finish under the glorious Florida sun.

“The conditions played to my favour and it was a bonus to execute a race that I’m really proud of,” said Jamnicky. “I fought all the way to the finish to try to get onto that top step of the podium.”

The soft-spoken Canuck ran out of real estate in her quest for the gold and reeling in American, Renee Tomlin on the run course. Tomlin topped Jamnicky by two seconds after breaking the finish ribbon with a time of 59:02. Kaitlin Donner, also of the United States, placed third at 59:08.

Brittany Warly, who resides in Denver, Colorado but races internationally for Canada, finished just off the podium in fourth spot at 59:23. Montreal’s Elisabeth Boutin grabbed the final spot in the top-five with a time of 59:42.

The Americans dominated the men’s PATCO sprint race on Saturday in Florida. William Huffman set the time to beat at 51:26. Tommy Zaferes clocked-in at 51:43 for second, while Austin Hindman locked up the bronze medal with a time of 51:57.

Charles Paquet, of Port Cartier, Que., was the top Canadian in sixth place. Canada’s reigning National Champion, Jeremy Briand, of Sainte-Julie, Que., was ninth at 52:31.
