TORONTO, Ont. (January 18, 2023) – Canada Basketball and the Federación Española de Baloncesto (Spanish Basketball Federation) today announced that Canada will participate in a two-game exhibition series in Spain ahead of the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023.

Canada’s Senior Men’s National Team will face the hosts and defending World Cup champions Spain on August 17, followed by runners-up in 2019, Argentina, on August 18 at the Palacio Municipal de Deportes de Granada in Granada, Spain.  Ticket information and additional competition details will be announced at a later date.

This series is the first announced exhibition games for the team ahead of the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023.

The Senior Men’s National Team will gather in Toronto for training camp in early August to begin World Cup preparations before departing for Europe for exhibition games.

Last May, Canada Basketball unveiled that fourteen of the country’s top players from across the NBA, NCAA and international leagues had signed a three-year commitment to represent Canada in the lead-up to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.  This group is complementary to a winter core roster of international and G League professional players who have proudly suited up for Canada throughout the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023 Americas Qualifiers.

With an undefeated record of 10-0, and one of only two teams in the world without a loss in the Qualifiers, Canada has already punched their ticket for this summer’s World Cup.  Canada will conclude the sixth and final window of the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023 Americas Qualifiers in February as they travel on the road to face Argentina (February 23, time TBD) and Venezuela (February 26), live on Sportsnet.

Last month, it was announced that Indonesia, one of the three host countries for the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023, selected Canada as the preferred team to play their Group Phase games in Jakarta.

The FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023, set to take place from August 25 to September 10, 2023, will see the Group Phase take place in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia. The Final Phase will follow in the Philippines capital city of Manila.

Canada can directly qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with a top-two finish amongst teams from the Americas at the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023.

Canada is currently ranked 15th in the FIBA World Ranking presented by Nike.
