Volleyball Canada – September 14, 2019:  Canada had a strong start, but allowed Korea to take over both teams’ final match today, and ended with a tough five-set 2-3 (25-11, 25-21, 21-25, 22-25, 10-15) loss at the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship in Cairo, Egypt.

“Today we played some of our best volleyball of the entire tournament,” said head coach Scott Koskie. “The girls were very focused and it showed in the way we started and played for the majority of the match. Unfortunately, we learned a hard lesson about international volleyball at the end of the fourth set, and we could not recover in the fifth.”

Canada was dominant in blocking and serving today, but Korea led in attacking points and capitalized on Canada’s errors.

The pool stage of the competition included 20 teams and took place over the first five days of the tournament, which was followed by four days of knockout and classification matches. Canada finishes in 14th place overall.

“For more than three weeks, we have been immersed in a volleyball environment and the girls never stopped giving everything they had. We could not be prouder of this group and the work they put in to compete at this tournament,” said Koskie, of the group that trained in the Niagara area and in Slovenia (Dras Training Centre) before heading to Egypt.

“The coaching and support staff were unbelievable in providing the framework to compete, learn, experience international volleyball. I am so proud of their commitment to volleyball in Canada.”

The United States and Italy will battle for first place today, and Brazil won the bronze over China, also today.
