QUEBEC CITY, QC – As the host of the Canada Cup East, Quebec City welcomed over 60 archers to Kamentukash Archery Club for what was a successful weekend. The weather was hot and humid, getting close to 38-40 degrees, with no wind. Kamentukash was ideally located 2 minutes from the host hotel, as well as close to the nearby grocery store. It was a quick drive away from the airport, and for those interested in being tourists, downtown was 20 minutes from the club and many restaurants were within walking distance.
The weekend started with an optional 720 round on Friday, with 35 athletes shooting. Benny Parenteau earned himself the highest score of the round, with a 676 in the senior compound division. Eleanor Brug, who travelled from British Columbia to participate in this competition, earned the highest score in the women’s senior recurve division with a total of 633.
The next morning brought on the qualifying 720 round, which would determine the seedings for match play. While the vast majority of participants hailed from Quebec, there were some competitors who travelled a greater distance. Athena Tran came up from the United States to compete, Chris Waterman travelled from Manitoba, and a few archers from Alberta and British Columbia respectively took part. Unlike Canada Cup West, a large number of the archers at this competition shot with a recurve bow, and a great number of the national development squad were present. The highest score of the compound shooters, and of the competition overall, was Tommy Plante with a score of 698.
The competition then turned to match play for the afternoon. The senior recurve men’s field had the largest number of competitors, with 19 archers shooting for gold. The final was very close, determined by a score of 7-6 and Andrew Smollett coming out on top. In this and many other categories, the top-scoring shooter in qualifications ended up carrying their success forward to the gold medal match.
Sunday morning kicked off with mixed team match play. Janna Hawash and Kurtis Ng took the gold medal in the cadet/masters recurve division. In a field of 6 teams in the compound mixed team event, Catérine Robert and Tommy Plante, a local team from QC, won gold. Natalee Chan and Benjamen Lee took the top spot in the senior recurve mixed team division, beating out Eleanor Brug and Brian Maxwell. It was a great competition, with some tight matches.

Canada Cup East was the final national event leading up to the Canadian Outdoor Championships in July, where archers from across the country will arrive in PEI to shoot in all three disciplines of 3D, field, and target.
