Canada Beats China, but must Look Ahead

Volleyball Canada – NINGBO, China. Aug. 10, 2019: Canada’s men’s team beat China today in five sets 3-2 (24-26, 25-21, 25-17, 23-25, 17-15), but now faces the reality that the team’s performance this weekend will not lead to Olympic qualification. Only the top team from each pool gets Tokyo 2020 spot.

Today in Pool F action, Ryan Sclater (20 points) and Nick Hoag (19 points) led the charge for Canada. Chinese player Zhejia Zhang had 19 points, including five aces, and Libin Liu had 20 points for the host team.

“I was happy with the reaction of the guys because they were quite disappointed after the (3-1) loss to Argentina yesterday,” said Canada’s head coach Glenn Hoag.

“We struggled in the first and fourth set – some problems with number 12’s (Zhang) serves in the first and then errors in the fourth, which didn’t enable us to win the game with full points. But now we have to focus on Finland (tomorrow) and get ready for the next step for us.”

Teams that don’t qualify in the international tournaments this weekend must compete in regional qualifiers.

“We came expecting that we would book our ticket to the Olympics, so obviously we are very disappointed with the results. I think we were outplayed this weekend, and we have to live it and focus on the next opportunity moving forward,” said Canada’s team captain Gord Perrin, a 2016 Olympian.

Tomorrow’s match vs Finland (who is winless so far in this tournament) is at 3 pm local, 3 am ET.

The men’s tournaments include:

• Pool A (in Varna): Brazil, Egypt, Bulgaria, Puerto Rico.
• Pool B (in Rotterdam): USA, Belgium, The Netherlands, Korea.
• Pool C (in Bari): Italy, Serbia, Australia, Cameroon.
• Pool D (in Gdansk): Poland, France, Slovenia, Tunisia.
• Pool E (in Saint Petersburg): Russia, Iran, Cuba, Mexico.
• Pool F (in Ningbo): Canada, Argentina, Finland, China.
