Gymnastics Canada – Ellie Black competes on the uneven bars during the all-around competition at the 2019 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Stuttgart, GER.

(PHOTO: GymCan/John Cheng) STUTTGART, GER (October 10, 2019) – Ellie Black of Halifax, NS just missed making it onto the podium in the women’s all-around competition on Thursday at the 2019 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Stuttgart, GER, finishing fourth, just 0.167 points away from the bronze medal. Brooklyn Moors of Cambridge, ON finished 14th.

Simone Biles of the USA claimed her fifth straight World Championships all-around title with a total score of 58.999 and the night’s top scores on three out of four apparatus. Tang Xijing of China claimed silver with a score of 56.899, while Angelina Melnikova of Russia took bronze with a score of 56.399.

Black swapped positions with Melnikova of Russia for most of the competition, with both laying down top performances on each apparatus. On the final rotation, Black elected to do a more difficult vault to garner more points. With a slightly short landing on her “Rudi” vault, Black scored a 14.566, and unfortunately injured her ankle and had to leave the floor with the assistance of her coach. She finished the day with a total score of 56.232.

“It was honestly a really good day for me, and I’m really happy with it,” said Black who was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain following the competition. “At the end, with the vault, when I landed it, I just felt a little bit of pain in my ankle, but I was really happy because I haven’t competed a front Rudi on vault in a really long time. It was just close to the end, so we needed to throw the harder vault just to see, but fourth in the world is still pretty incredible.”

Moors also had a fantastic meet, scoring a total of 54.498 to finish 14th. After some uncharacteristic falls during the qualifiers and in the team competition, she was looking to redeem herself in the all-around: “I wanted to redeem myself, because I didn’t do what I knew I could the last few days. My floor routine was ok, it wasn’t my best, but I’m so thankful for everyone that’s helped me.”

The World Championships continue tomorrow with the all-around competition for the men – no Canadians qualified for this final. Saturday and Sunday will feature the apparatus finals.
