Black and Olsen Share Vault Podium at 2019 Pan American Games

LIMA, PER (July 30, 2019) – Ellie Black of Halifax, NS added to her Pan American Games medal collection again on Tuesday, winning gold in the vault apparatus final, and bronze on the uneven bars, bringing her total so far at these Games to four with two more events to go on Wednesday. Her teammate Shallon Olsen of Surrey,BC also captured bronze on vault, bringing her Games medal total to two.
 
“It was awesome to just get another chance to compete and represent Canada, and to able to share both those finals – with Shallon on vault, and Brooklyn (Moors) on bars – was super fun, and we’re looking forward to more finals tomorrow,” said Black who now stands as the winningest athlete for Canada at the Pan Am Games with 9 total medals. Now I’m going to go back to the village, rest and recover, and try to hit more good routines for Canada tomorrow.”
 
Olsen entered the competition as the reigning World silver medallist on vault, but a slight touch down on her second vault knocked down her score here today: “Our team has so much potential. We’ve been working really hard in the gym, and the smallest details are the things that count the most, and matter a lot, so leading into Worlds this year, we’re going to be working on those little details, and working on cleaner execution, better artistry – just always looking for those little improvements.”
 
Moors, who was surprised to make the uneven bars final given that it’s generally her weakest event, scored a very respectable 13.000 to finish 6th overall. She’ll hit the floor again tomorrow where she’ll be looking to climb on to the podium again with her crowd-favourite floor routine.
 
The judging wasn’t so kind to the men today, with Rene Cournoyer of Repentigny, QC scoring a low 13.833 for what looked like a solid routine: “I’m slightly disappointed, but also very proud. I did a very good routine, I held every position that extra second, I made all the little details as perfect as possible. It turns out I did a great routine, but didn’t get the results I think I should have had perhaps, so I can only be a little bit disappointed with the results, but very proud of my performance.
 
Also competing today were Zachary Clay of Chilliwack, BC and Justin Karstadt of Toronto on the pommel horse where both struggled with the apparatus and finished 6th and 7th overall respectively.
 
Cournoyer will get another chance to add to his team bronze tomorrow when he’ll compete in the horizontal bar finals along with Sam Zakutney from Ottawa, ON. Karstadt will also compete again, this time on the parallel bars. For the women – Black will compete in both the balance beam and floor finals, while Moors will compete on floor. The competition kicks off at 2:00pm ET.
