Pat Bird (AB) and Claire Day (AB) are the 2023 Canadian Outdoor Singles champions and will represent Canada at the 2024 World Bowls Champion of Champions event next year.

It was an Alberta-centric medal round with 3 out of 4 women and 2 out of 4 men hailing from the Wild Rose province.

Bird, the reigning men’s champion, was able to defend his title at the Juan de Fuca Lawn Bowls Club. After going 5-0 in his section, Bird took down Darrell Hanoski (SK) 21-8 in the quarterfinals, and fellow Albertan Roy Riege 21-2 in the semifinals. In the finals, Bird faced Dave DeFoe (ON) in a gruelling gold-medal match. In the end, Bird came away with the victory 21-16 to repeat as the Outdoor Singles Champion.

Day went 3-1 in her section before taking down Josephine Lee (BC) 21-13 in the quarterfinals and then defeating Bev Robinson (AB) 21-14 in the semifinals. After defeating Bev in the semis, Day took down the other Robinson sister, Jan, 21-15 in the finals to claim the gold.

In the bronze medal matches, Riege defeated Bob Van Walleghem (MB) 21-10 to take home a medal, while Bev Robinson defeated Sarina Mak (BC) 21-11.

Play now moves to men’s and women’s Pairs and Fours at the Juan de Fuca LBC, with action beginning August 23rd at 9am PDT.
