TEAM CANADA INSIGHTS:

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING

  • Antoine Cyr and Graham Ritchie’s fifth-place in the men’s team sprint (classic) is Canada’s best-ever result. Our country’s previous best was an 11th place finish by George Grey and Devon Kershaw at Turin 2006.

FREESTYLE SKIING

  • At least one Canadian has been on every Olympic podium in women’s ski cross since the event debuted at Vancouver 2010.
  • Kelsey Serwa is currently the only Canadian to have two Olympic medals in ski cross.
  • Two Olympic medallists – Brittany Phelan (gold, Sochi 2014) and Marielle Thompson (silver, PyeongChang 2018) – hope to add their names next to Serwa in Canadian Olympic history.

SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATING

  • With his sixth Olympic medal, Charles Hamelin:
    • Ties with Cindy Klassen (long track speed skating) as Canada’s most decorated Winter Olympian and is Canada most decorated male Winter Olympian;
    • Ties with Andre De Grasse (athletics) as Canada’s most decorated male Olympian;
    • Stands alone as Canada’s most decorated Olympic short track speed skater;
    • Becomes the first male short track speed skater to win a medal in five different Olympic Winter Games (Arianna Fontana of Italy did it earlier in Beijing);
    • Joins Hayley Wickenheiser (hockey), Jayna Hefford (hockey) and Caroline Ouellette (hockey) as the only Canadian Olympians (winter or summer) to have won four gold medals.
  • Canada earned its first gold medal in the men’s 5000m relay since Charles Hamelin, Guillaume Bastille, François Hamelin, Olivier Jean and François-Louis Tremblay won it at Vancouver 2010.
  • The gold medal is the seventh Olympic medal Canada has won in the men’s 5000m relay since it was added to the Olympic program at Albertville 1992. Canada only missed the podium at Lillehammer 1994 and Sochi 2014 and has more medals in the event than any other country.

LONG TRACK SPEED SKATING

  • Alexa Scott and Maddison Pearman will look to be the fourth and fifth Canadians to win an Olympic medal in the women’s 1000m following Christine Nesbitt (gold – Vancouver 2010), Cindy Klassen (silver – Turin 2006) and Team Canada’s Beijing 2022 Chef de Mission Catriona Le May Doan (bronze – Nagano 1998).
