20 time Paralympic and 4 time Commonwealth swimming medallist was Canada’s Assistant Chef de Mission at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games

July 28, 2020 – OTTAWA – On the two-year countdown to the Opening Ceremony of the 2022 Birmingham Games, Commonwealth Sport Canada (CSC) is pleased to announce that Paralympic and Commonwealth swimming champion Benoit Huot has been named Chef de Mission for Team Canada 2022.  

Huot, from Longueuil, QC, is one of Canada’s most accomplished Paralympians of all time, having won 20 medals at five Paralympic Games (2000 – 2016). He has also won a total of four medals at 3 Commonwealth Games (2002, 2006, 2010). A member of the Order of Canada and Knight of the Order of Quebec, he is the recipient of a number of awards and honours, such as the 2003 CGF Athlete Of The Year With A Disability, Para-swimmer Of The Year by Swimming World Magazine in 2005, 2012 Paralympic Games Closing Ceremony Flag Bearer and more. 

“It was such a privilege for me to work with Team Canada at the Gold Coast Games in 2018”, said Huot. “Being named Chef for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham is a huge honour, and I will do everything I can to ensure an inclusive and inspiring environment for our athletes. The Commonwealth Games have been a significant part of my high performance journey, and I believe that their focus on inclusivity and diversity is of even more importance in the world that we live in today. I look forward to being part of these amazing Games, and hope to inspire our athletes and para-athletes to achieve their objectives in Birmingham in 2022.” 

The 22nd Commonwealth Games will take place July 28th to August 8th, 2022 in Birmingham, England, with up to 4,500 athletes taking part. The twelve-day sporting and cultural event will feature 19 sports and 8 para-sports as part of its programme. The Commonwealth Games are the only multi-sport event that feature equal standing for sport and para-sport events, and these 2022 Games will showcase the largest para-sport programme ever. In addition,for the first time in its history, the Games will feature more women’s (135) than men’s (133) medal events.

With 71 participating countries and over 4000 athletes taking part in the Commonwealth Games, these Games offer a valuable opportunity for all Canadian athletes, as an integral step on the path to Olympic and Paralympic success.

Le nageur 20 fois médaillé paralympique et quadruple médaillé des Jeux du Commonwealth a servi comme Chef de Mission adjoint aux Jeux du Commonwealth de 2018 à Gold Coast

Le 28 juillet 2020 – OTTAWA – À l’occasion de la date qui marque le compte à rebours de deux ans avant la cérémonie d’ouverture des Jeux de Birmingham 2022, Commonwealth Sport Canada (CSC) est fier d’annoncer que Benoit Huot, champion nageur paralympique et des Jeux du Commonwealth, a été nommé Chef de Mission d’Équipe Canada 2022.
Le Longueuillois est l’un des plus illustres Paralympiens canadiens de tous les temps, ayant remporté vingt médailles à cinq Jeux paralympiques (2000 à 2016), en plus de remporter un total de quatre médailles à trois éditions des Jeux du Commonwealth (2002, 2006 et 2010). Membre de l’Ordre du Canada et Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Québec, il est récipiendaire de plusieurs prix et mentions, dont notamment l’athlète ayant un handicap de l’année 2003 de la CGF, paranageur de l’année 2005 du magazine Swimming World et porte-drapeau canadien de la cérémonie de clôture des Paralympiques de 2012.

« Ce fut un grand privilège pour moi de travailler avec l’équipe canadienne aux Jeux de Gold Coast en 2018 », a partagé Huot. « C’est vraiment un grand honneur d’être nommé Chef pour les Jeux du Commonwealth de 2022 à Birmingham et je ferai tout en mon possible pour contribuer à créer un environnement inclusif et inspirant pour nos athlètes. Les Jeux du Commonwealth ont fait partie intégrante de mon cheminement de haute performance et je crois que l’accent qu’ils mettent sur l’inclusion et la diversité est davantage important dans les circonstances mondiales actuelles. J’ai tellement hâte de faire à nouveau partie de ces incroyables Jeux et j’espère inspirer nos athlètes et para-athlètes à atteindre leurs objectifs à Birmingham en 2022. »

Les XXIIes Jeux du Commonwealth auront lieu du 28 juillet au 8 août 2022 à Birmingham, en Angleterre où l’on attend jusqu’à 4500 athlètes. L’événement sportif et culturel de douze jours mettra en vedette un programme de 19 sports et 8 parasports. Les Jeux du Commonwealth sont le seul événement multisport d’envergure où les médailles des épreuves de sport physiquement apte et de parasport ont le même statut. Ces Jeux de 2022 incluent le plus grand programme de parasport de l’histoire. De plus, pour la première fois de l’histoire, les Jeux mettront en vedette davantage de médailles pour les femmes (135) que les hommes (133).
