Ringette Canada – Red Deer, Alberta – February 20, 2019 – Ringette’s playoff round started today at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer and teams battled hard for a spot in the semifinals. At the end of the day, Manitoba will meet Quebec and British Columbia will meet Ontario in the semifinals tomorrow.

Alberta and Prince Edward Island started the day off with a quarterfinal play-in game, with the hometown favorites posting an 11-2 win over Prince Edward Island. Edmonton’s Torrie Shennan posted a hat trick and two assists in the game for Alberta. Singles came from Charlottetown’s Christina Devine and Devon Costello for Prince Edward Island. Alberta’s win booked them a spot in the quarterfinal at the end of the day against Ontario. 

In the first quarterfinal of the day, fans were treated to a close and exciting game between Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Manitoba continued their winning streak and came away with a 5-4 over Saskatchewan. Winnipeg’s Alana Lesperance, who has been a scoring phenom at the games, talked about her team’s performance following the game. “We were all really tired, but we focused on executing our plays and we took short shifts. Going forward we will do the same and we will be playing with lots of heart.”

British Columbia and New Brunswick met up in the second quarterfinal of the day and while New Brunswick came back to score two after a 4-1 deficit at the half, British Columbia held them off and came away with the 4-3 win. Following the game, Richmond’s Hailey Sutherland-Takasaki talked about how her team will prepare for the semifinal game. “Going into the next game we will stay focused, rely on each other and know each other’s role on the team. And take some deep breaths.”

Quebec dominated in their quarterfinal game against Nova Scotia today and came away with a 13-1 win. Laval’s Mégane Fortin and Montreal’s Isabella Laroque both posted hat tricks in the game and Laurence St-Denis (Ste-Marthe-sur-le-Lac) assisted on five goals. The lone Nova Scotia goal came from Cole Harbour’s Martha Avery.

In the last quarterfinal of the day, Ontario continued their winning streak and downed Alberta 8-6. Morriston’s Claire Wyville picked up a pair of goals and an assist in the game.

Tomorrow, Thursday February 21, teams will move into semi-finals and there will also be some placement games. The schedule is as follows (all times Mountain Standard Time):

11:30 – NB vs. AB

 

Semi-final games:

15:00 – QC vs. MB

17:30 – BC vs. ON
