Table Tennis Canada is excited to announce that all Board of Directors, Staff and National Team Coaches have taken a huge step towards SAFE SPORT in Table Tennis in Canada, creating a culture to identify and prevent situations of maltreatment. As the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) says “Together, we can make sport safe for everyone.”
“I am very proud that our Board and our staff, as well as the coaches working with our national team members, have all taken the Safe Sport course online and on time. We are in the process of building our Safe Sport “Dome”, which started last February with TTCAN adopting of the UNIVERSAL CODE OF CONDUCT TO PREVENT AND ADDRESS MALTREATMENT IN SPORT (UCCMS).
I would like to thank Richard MacLaren for helping TTCAN with the adoption of the UCCMS. We are now in the process of reviewing all our policies to ensure they are aligned with the UCCMS. We will soon have a complete “Safe Sport Dome” section on our website with policies and procedures related to safe sport.” – Adham Sharara, President Table Tennis Canada
“Safe, inclusive sport environments help make sport rewarding and enriching for all” says the CAC website. By completing the free Safe Sport training on the National Coaching Certification Program “The Locker’s” website, our Board of Directors, Staff and National Team Coaches gained the knowledge and skills to create healthy and safe environments by recognizing, addressing and preventing maltreatment in sport.
The course was offered for free by the CAC on their online platform called The Locker. An e-learning platform that allowed our volunteers and paid staff to learn more about maltreatment in sport in this 45-60min course. After going through it, they were able to receive recognition within the National Coaching Certification Program and on their online profile on The Locker.
“The Safe Sport training is the first conscientious step to make sure that all parts involved in sports (coaches, athletes, delegates, staff, volunteers) will be protected in a sports environment against any form of abuse – verbal or physical of any kind – ensuring the participation of all despite one’s background, education or gender. Safe Sport promotes awareness to dangers that may occur intentionally or not in sports. It promotes equity and inclusivity. Table Tennis Canada is proud to carry this beacon of awareness amongst other National Sports Organizations.” Marles Martins, Technical Development Manager Table Tennis Canada We will encourage our Members, the Provinces & Territories, to follow the initiative by the National Sport Organization and take the Safe Sport training. In the near future, Table Tennis Canada will make it mandatory for all coaches that want to participate in national/international events to have completed the Safe Sport training.
