2021 Canadian Diving Trials Day 1 

Day 1 of the 2021 Canadian Diving Trials saw Pamela Ware leading the open 3m following the prelims and Katelyn Fung on top after the open platform prelims. On the men’s side, Rylan Wiens is in first after the open platform prelims and Cedric Fofana leads the way following the open 3m prelims at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.

The event is an opportunity for Canadian divers to claim their Olympic spots ahead of the Tokyo Games. A total of six spots are up for grabs this week. 

“We were pleased with Pam Ware. She showed the level of performance that we’ve been watching her have in practice for the last several weeks. That was great to see,” said Diving Plongeon Canada’s Chief Technical Officer, Mitch Geller. “Pleased with the men’s platform. It was a real battle, as we expected. Rylan Wiens, was the top performer there, obviously. He won the event. He also gained a point over what he had done in the World Cup, which is his personal best. That was really impressive on him.” 

Two spots for the 2020 Olympic Games are up for grabs in the women’s 3m individual event. 

Ware (Greenfield Park, QC) scored 356.10 on Tuesday to edge out Jennifer Abel (Laval, QC), who is in second with a combined score of 329.60 and Melissa Citrini-Beaulieu (St. Constant, QC) sits in third with a score of 275.10.

“I felt really good. Today was just to get a better score than the score that I already have. I achieved that with flying colours, so I am really happy,” said Ware. “I was very happy with my fourth dive, my reverse-two-and-a-half pike because I was really forward on the board, and usually when I do my hurdle like that, I go really far and short on my back. But I did it really well in the air and a really good entry still, so I’m glad I was able to manage that.”

One Olympic spot remains open in the women’s open platform event. Meaghan Benfeito (Laval, QC)  has already received a pre-nomination from Diving Plongeon Canada and is not competing this week.

Fung (London, ON) finished with a cumulative score of 310.85, finishing ahead of Celina Toth (St. Thomas, ON), who scored 300.20 and Kate Miller (Ottawa, ON) was third with a score of 244.80.

Two Olympic spots are for grabs in the men’s open platform event where Wiens (Saskatoon, SK) sits in first, following the prelims with a personal best score of 489.15. 

“I dove quite well. I was satisfied with the results,” Wiens said. “I was consistent the whole way through. A couple of things I could clean up, but this is exactly what I wanted to do: just kind of get comfortable competing in this pool and put a couple of dives in so I was pretty happy with it. I wasn’t expecting a personal best, but my goal was to obviously get as high as I could cause every score counts now. Personal best, I was pretty happy with that.”

Nathan Zsombor-Murray (Pointe-Claire, QC) is second with a score of 442.10 and Matt Cullen (Rosemère, QC) is in third after scoring 416.60. 

One spot also remains open for the Olympics in the men’s 3m springboard event where Fofana (Quebec City, QC) leads after the prelims with a score of 470.00.

François Imbeau-Dulac (St-Lazare, QC) is in second with a score of 426.15 while Thomas Ciprick (Calgary, AB) is third with a score of 388.55.
