Did you know? A recent study of wheelchair basketball players found that fish oil supplements measurably prevent muscle injury. Athletes consumed 3g of DHA-rich fish oil for 30 days, and found significant reductions in muscle damage, inflammatory disturbances and neutrophil (white blood cell) death caused by acute exercise.

App-based intervention

Promising Practice Research in the US examined the use of smartphone apps, remote coaching and modest financial incentives to increase healthy living and reduce chronic disease. Results indicated the intervention supported participants to meet the guidelines for fruit and vegetable and high saturated fat consumption, moderate to vigorous physical activity, and sedentary leisure screen time.

In Canadian Sport History On October 9, 2003, Jordin Tootoo made history becoming the first Inuk player in the NHL. Raised in Rankin, Nunavut, Tootoo quickly became a role model for youth in Nunavut. After his brother’s suicide, Tootoo started the Team Tootoo Fund in 2011 to support suicide awareness and prevention in Canadian youth.
