Moneyball

Data analytics gave the Oakland A’s a competitive advantage…until the Moneyball book and film were released. The use of data analytics has since spread throughout the sport world, negatively impacting the A’s advantage. Researchers from the University of Toronto advise, “If you have a built-in advantage, don’t ever talk about it.”

Cryotherapy

Cold-water immersion, also known as cryotherapy, has been used to treat injuries, reduce heat illness, and reduce delayed onset muscle soreness. Research in the International Journal of Athletic Therapy & Training found cryotherapy reduced an athlete’s perception of soreness but had no effect on muscle performance recovery following a single bout of training.

Data collected from 77 million bike share trips revealed that women are less likely to use bike-sharing programs for active transportation if the stations are located in busy city centers instead of quieter, residential neighbourhoods.

Technology

Research from Brazil revealed that smartphone-based social media use and playing video games impaired passing decision-making amongst professional athletes. Findings suggest athletes should avoid social media platforms and/or playing video games immediately before games to avoid any negative impacts on performance. 10,000 Hour Rule

The “10,000-hour rule” – the notion that 10,000 hours of practice are needed to become an expert in any domain (including sport) – is based on a 1993 study of violinists. But new research replicating the 1993 study could not verify the results. The amount of practice accumulated did not correspond to skill level.

Fitness and Brain Health

Physical fitness could be the key to enhancing brain health, according to a recent study published in Nature. Among healthy young adults, better physical fitness was associated with preserved brain structure and enhanced cognition.
