Can Sport Regulate Itself? Safe Sport Forum

November 17, 2023 9:00 AM EST
|

The Centre for Sport Capacity is hosting a hybrid Safe Sport Forum, on Friday, November 17th, 2023, from 9-3pmĀ at Brock University.

As a sport leader, the Safe Sport Forum enables you to learn about the governance and regulatory functions of sport organizations across all system levels, and better serve the athletes, coaches, and partners involved in your organizations.

The Forum topics include policy and rule development, monitoring and enforcement, the self-regulation of sport (should it/can it?), governing for safe sport among other topics. We pose the question:

How does the sport system as currently structured and governed enable and/or constrain the ability of sport to enact the change needed to survive the Safe Sport crisis and ensure a safe place for all participants?

The forum discusses the regulatory design of the sport system. Our speakers will address various issues such as self-regulation, monitoring and enforcement, values promoted through sport, and athlete experiences with safe sport legal mechanisms. Each speaker will address the following:

  • Dr. Peter Donnelly – The self-regulatory nature of Canadian amateur sport ā€“ is it still viable?
  • Dr. Hilary Findlay and Marcus Mazzucco – The ā€˜legal landscapeā€™ of sport experienced as a regulatory form of governance.ā€Æ
  • Dr. Eric MacIntosh – Towards a safer sport culture: a management by values approach to sport.
  • Allison Forsyth – Athlete experiences dealing with the new national third party safe sport mechanism ā€“ instilling athlete faith in the sport system.
  • Dr. Curtis Fogel ā€“ Book Talk on recently released ā€œSexual Abuse in Canadian Sportā€
  • Charlene Krepiakevich – What is happening at the provincial/territorial level to ensure a fair and safe sport environment.
  • Dr. Julie Stevens – Moderator
