WINNIPEG MANITOBA TO HOST 2020 IIJL WORLD JUNIOR LACROSSE CHAMPIONSHIP

Canadian Lacrosse League Awards 2021 IIJL World Junior Lacrosse Championship to City of Winnipeg, Bell MTS Place

[Rescheduled from 2020 to 2021]

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA – The world’s best junior-aged box lacrosse players will be competing for gold at the 2021 IIJL World Junior Lacrosse Championship August 8 – 14, 2021 in Winnipeg, Canada at Bell MTS Place.

International Indoor Junior Lacrosse (IIJL), in partnership with the Canadian Lacrosse League (CLL), has awarded the 5th edition of the international tournament to the City of Winnipeg, in partnership with Tourism Winnipeg and True North Sports & Entertainment.

“Hosting the 2021 IIJL World Junior Lacrosse Championship is a great opportunity to showcase Winnipeg to the rest of Canada. We are thrilled to welcome nearly 300 athletes [and coaches] to our city next summer and know our incredible community of sports fans and world-class attractions will provide a memorable experience for each and every participant.” – Dayna Spiring, President & CEO of Economic Development Winnipeg Inc.

The 2021 IIJL World Junior Lacrosse Championship will be hosted at Bell MTS Place, home of the National Hockey League (NHL) Winnipeg Jets and the American Hockey League (AHL) Manitoba Moose.

Leading the committee is Tournament Chair Chris Fox, executive director of the Canadian Lacrosse League.

“As much as the Championship is used to develop box lacrosse internationally, as the Canadian Lacrosse League, we take the opportunity to host as a way to re-establish lacrosse as Canada’s National Sport. Introducing elite level lacrosse to Canadian communities that do not have the NLL or Junior A,” said Chris Fox, executive director, Canadian Lacrosse League. “More importantly, we are committed to working with local First Nations communities to provide opportunities to connect with a sport that is truly theirs.” Fox add. “Our work has already to form our host committee, find volunteers, and build relationships with the Winnipeg corporate community to ensure the 2021 Championship has a positively impact at every level.”

Legacy plans for any potential profits of the event will be used by the IIJL to develop the game of box lacrosse internationally and support local Winnipeg and Manitoba grassroots lacrosse and First Nations programs.
