World Championships Elimination Round Begins Thursday for Team Canada

WINNIPEG, December 2, 2021 – The preliminary round has wrapped up at the International Racquetball Federation World Championships being held in Guatemala City, Guatemala from November 29 to December 6. Athletes have moved on to the single elimination medal round, which began Thursday morning.  

Athletes are seeded in the medal round based on results from the last three days. This puts Coby Iwaasa of Lethbridge and Samuel Murray of Baie-Comeau in a good position. The team had an important win on Monday against a strong team from Bolivia. Another win today put them into first place in their pool.  

Michle Morissette, also of Baie-Comeau, finished in second place in her singles pool after winning two of her preliminary matches.  

Lee Connell of Saskatoon, Francis Guillemette of Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu and Juliette Parent of Saint-Jacques all play their first elimination round singles matches on Thursday morning. Frdrique Lambert of Montral and Alexis Iwaasa of Lethbridge play their womens doubles match on Thursday afternoon. Morissette and the mens doubles team of Iwaasa and Murray have byes in the first round. Preliminary results for Team Canada are listed below. Merynanyelly Delgado (DOM) defeated Parent (CAN), 15-12, 15-3; 

Carla Munoz (CHI) defeated Parent (CAN), 15-6, 15-7. 

Womens Singles: Pool F 

Gabriela Martinez (GUA) defeated Michle Morissette (CAN), 15-2, 15-3; 

Morissette (CAN) defeated Maria Paz Riquelme (COL), 15-2, 15-12; 

Morissette (CAN) defeated Ayako Hanashi (JAP), 15-5, 11-15, 11-2. 

Mens Singles: Pool D 

Andre Parilla (MEX) defeated Francis Guillemette (CAN), 15-4, 15-2: 

Diego Garcia (ARG) defeated Guillemette (CAN), 9-15, 15-3, 11-4; 

Guillemette (CAN) defeated Eoin Tynan (IRE), 15-5, 15-6. 

Mens Singles: Pool F 

Mario Mercado (BOL) defeated Lee Connell (CAN), 15-9, 15-7; 

Juan Jose Salvatierra (GUA) defeated Connell (CAN), 14-15, 15-11, 11-6; 

Connell (CAN) defeated Rodrigo Salgado (CHI), 15-11, 15-4. 

Womens Doubles: Pool B 

Erika Manilla / Rhonda Rajsich (USA) defeated Frdrique Lambert / Alexis Iwaasa (CAN), 15-7, 15-0; 

Valeria Centellas & Natalie Mendez (ARG) defeated Lambert / Iwaasa (CAN), 15-6, 15-3. 

Mens Doubles: Pool D 

Coby Iwaasa / Samuel Murray (CAN) defeated Roland Keller / Conrrado Moscoso (BOL), 9-15, 15-13, 11-9; 

Iwaasa / Murray (CAN) defeated Raphael Galica / Rodrigo Selgado (CHI), 15-3, 15-4.
