Winnipeg Hosting National Judo Competition

WINNIPEG, MB—Judo Manitoba is hosting a national judo tournament at the Dakota Community Centre, 1188 Dakota Street in Winnipeg, on October 26 and 27.

MB has a strong, vibrant, and competitive judo community with 14 clubs, 506 registered judoka (judo students), and 94 black belts across the province.

Last July, Judo Manitoba teammates competed at the 2024 US Open in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, U.S. and took home one gold and three bronze medals!

Judo Manitoba is proud of Christa Deguchi’s Paris Olympic judo gold medal in the women’s under 57-kilogram weight class. Christa has strong ties to Manitoba.

This is the third year that Judo Manitoba has hosted this national tournament. The tournament attracts competitors from across Canada and the world. Last year, there were over 329 competitors. Manitoba competitors won 43 medals, 17 gold, 15 silver and 11 bronze medals. Competitors range in age from as young as 10 to veterans (i.e., 30 or older). The tournament includes kata (technical demonstration of judo techniques), ne-waza (fighting on the ground), and tachi-waza (fighting starts standing up).

Medalling at national tournaments, like the one hosted by Manitoba Judo, determines who is on Canada’s national judo team and, ultimately, who represents Canada at international and Olympic tournaments.

Manitobans can have a front-row seat at a high-level sports event; better yet, attendance is free! Come cheer on your Manitoba competitors.
