On Friday, September 26, 2025 from 7pm – 9pm, Water Polo Canada and the Manitoba Water Polo Association (MWPA) are hosting a funintroduction to water polo for young swimmers ages 6–13 who are looking for a fun new challenge. This workshop provides an opportunity to learn water safety, passing, catching, shooting, and experience the teamwork and strategy that make water polo so appealing.
“This is a unique opportunity for Manitoba athletes to learn from individuals who have represented Canada on the world stage.” said Lisa Cupples, President of the MWPA.
“It’s exciting to bring our experiences back to the grassroots level,” said Team Canada Olympian Kelly McKee. “These camps show young athletes what’s possible and help build a strong future for water polo in Canada.”
What is Water Polo
Water polo is a competitive team sport. The game consists of four quarters in which the two teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team’s net. Each begins with a sprint for the ball at the centre, and the team in possession has 30 seconds to shoot. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins the match. If tied after regulation, a penalty shootout decides the outcome. Each team is made up of six field players and one goalkeeper. Except for the goalkeeper, players participate in both offensive and defensive roles. Water polo is played in deep water – meaning that players cannot touch the bottom. Teamwork, tactical thinking and game awareness are highly important aspects in a game of water polo. Special equipment for water polo includes a water polo ball, numbered and coloured caps; and two goals, which either float in the water or are attached to the side of the pool.
