Volleyball Canada Announces 2020 Beach National Teams

January 17, 2020 – Volleyball Canada is proud to announce the 2020 National teams for the Beach Volleyball programs.

Headlining the athletes are the duo of Sarah Pavan (Kitchener, ON) and Melissa Humana-Paredes (Toronto, ON). The Senior Team pair is currently the number one ranked women’s team in the world, after a remarkable 2019 that saw them win a gold medal in the 2019 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship in Hamburg, Germany (that earned a berth in the Olympic Games), and two gold medals at the FIVB World Tour in Edmonton, Alberta and Vienna, Austria. They were also named the FIVB’s Most Outstanding Team for the World Tour.

The other two women on Canada’s Senior Team are Heather Bansley (Waterdown, ON) and Brandie Wilkerson (Toronto, ON). The duo won two bronze medals on the World Tour in 2019 after winning back-to-back gold medals to end 2018. For their overall performance, they sit sixth on the FIVB Olympic ranking.

On the men’s side, Sam Schachter (Richmond Hill, ON) and Sam Pedlow (Barrie, ON) are the top-ranked Canadian men, sitting 15th in the Olympic ranking. Their 2019 season was highlighted by a silver medal at the NORCECA Continental Championship in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.

The final pair on the Canadian Senior Team are Ben Saxton (Calgary, AB) and Grant O’Gorman (Scarborough, ON). The duo won a silver medal in 2019 on the World Tour on home soil, in Edmonton, Alberta.

Currently, Pavan and Humana-Paredes are the lone team guaranteed a spot in the 2020 Olympics, due to their World Championship victory. The duos of Bansley and Wilkerson and Schachter and Pedlow are currently holding a spot that would qualify them if they can maintain their rankings until the cut off of June 14, 2020. Saxton and O’Gorman are currently on the outside looking in, but not by much. A strong start to the 2020 season could push them into an Olympic berth.

Volleyball Canada dévoile la composition de ses équipes nationales de volleyball de plage pour 2020

17 janvier 2020 – Volleyball Canada est fier d’annoncer la composition des équipes nationales du programme canadien de beach volleyball pour la saison 2020.

En tête de lice, nous retrouvons le duo composé de Sarah Pavan (Kitchener, ON) et de Melissa Humana-Paredes (Toronto, ON). Ces athlètes de l’équipe nationale senior occupent actuellement le premier rang mondial chez les femmes après une saison 2019 remarquable où elles ont décroché la médaille d’or des Championnats du monde de volleyball de plage de la FIVB 2019 à Hambourg en Allemagne (ce qui a permis au Canada d’obtenir une place au tournoi des Jeux olympiques) ainsi que deux médailles d’or d’étapes du Circuit mondial de la FIVB, soit à Edmonton en Alberta et à Vienne en Autriche. Elles ont aussi été nommées Équipe par excellence de la FIVB, au terme de la saison 2019 du circuit mondial.

Les deux autres Canadiennes qui évolueront dans les rangs seniors sont Heather Bansley (Waterdown, ON) et Brandie Wilkerson (Toronto, ON). Ce duo a remporté deux médailles de bronze sur le circuit mondial en 2019 après avoir remporté deux médailles d’or consécutives pour conclure l’année 2018. Leurs performances leur permettent d’occuper actuellement le sixième rang du classement olympique de la FIVB.

Chez les hommes, Sam Schachter (Richmond Hill, ON) et Sam Pedlow (Barrie, ON) sont les Canadiens les mieux classés, occupant le 15e rang du classement olympique. Leur saison 2019 a été marquée par une médaille d’argent aux Championnats continentaux de la NORCECA à Boca Chica en République dominicaine.

L’autre duo chez les hommes de catégorie senior sera composé de Ben Saxton (Calgary, AB) et de Grant O’Gorman (Scarborough, ON). Le duo a remporté une médaille d’argent en 2019 sur le circuit mondial à domicile, soit à l’étape d’Edmonton en Alberta.

Actuellement, Pavan et Humana-Paredes forment la seule équipe détentrice d’une place pour les Jeux olympiques de 2020 suite à leur conquête aux Championnats du monde. Les duos composés de Bansley et Wilkerson et de Schachter et Pedlow occupent actuellement un rang qui leur procurerait une qualification s’ils peuvent maintenir ce classement jusqu’au 14 juin 2020, soit la date de coupure fixée par la FIVB. Un bon début de saison en 2020 les pousserait vers une place à Tokyo cet été.
